A chicken rushing to Sydney City Farm

Q: WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? - 22/12/2010

A: TO VISIT THE SYDNEY CITY FARM, OF COURSE.........

The heart of Sydney is one step closer to welcoming a real City Farm, and the chicken, back into the urban scene. A Feasibility Study prepared by CLOUSTON for the City of Sydney was last week approved by Council to be placed on public exhibition for comment until the 25th of February 2011.

Commissioned by Council in response to growing community demand for a City Farm in the LGA, CLOUSTON's study aimed to identify a preferred site and management model for this exciting initiative, drawing on best practice examples from Australia and overseas, current research and literature, stakeholder consultation and field work investigations to establish issues, objectives, evaluation criteria and recommendations for a future Sydney City Farm.

The final recommendation was for the establishment of a farm model in which elements of agriculture, education and recreation are shared across several urban sites initially at the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo and Sydney Park at St. Peters, offering a greater diversity of opportunity and experience to a wide ranging community. Following the public exhibition period, the City of Sydney are likely to engage in detailed consultation and undertake specific site analysis before adopting an implementation plan, so we won’t be counting our chickens before they are hatched!

The Study document will be put on exhibition in the New Year and can then be viewed at Council's website.
