TIGER BRENNAN DRIVE OPENS FOR BUSINESS - 21/12/2010
The final link in the arterial connection between Palmerston and Darwin CBD is now in place, with the official opening of the Tiger Brennan Drive Extension and Interchange yesterday presided over by the Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, The Hon Anthony Albanese MP, and Chief Minister for the Northern Territory, The Hon Paul Henderson MLA.
Early in the design process, the NT Government recognised that Tiger Brennan Drive held the opportunity to enhance the arrival experience into Darwin, and CLOUSTON Associates was engaged to provide landscape and urban design advice as well as investigate public art and wayfinding opportunities along the road corridor. We subsequently prepared a public art strategy and considered a number of themes exploring the unique qualities of the Top End landscape. It was decided to further develop the theme of 'Seasons' from a Larrakia perspective.
Working collaboratively with local Larrakia artists Kenny Reid, James Gaston and Peter Brown, CLOUSTON incorporated representations of flora and fauna evocative of the 'build up' through sculptural elements, relief panels and painted artwork into the design of the large scale grade separated interchange. A 'spear grass' barrier flanks the pedestrian bridge, while the verge below plays host to tall, sculptural local birds cast in high grade steel, and the vehicle bridges dazzle with orange, green and blue to evoke the vibrancy of the harbour and landscape during the build up season.
From now on, visitors and locals choosing Tiger Brennan Drive as their entry point into Darwin will not only save travel time but also encounter a visual treat which captures the essence of the region's cultural and natural heritage in a simple and effective display of art and engineering in harmony.
